Who are we?  We are a group of individuals from many different walks of life. Beautifully diverse in our backgrounds, skills, and talents, we have come together united by a deep appreciation for Hawaii and a shared mission: to be the Pure Aloha change we wish to see in the world, one heartbeat at a time. Our speciality: serving guests with warm hospitality at the House of Pure Aloha.

Individually we are known as, “HOPA Team Members” or “HOPAHs” (HOPA Hosts), collectively we are known as, the one and the only: “Team HOPA”.  Want to get to know us a little better, here are some fun facts!


 

UNCLE CLAY, Co-Founder & Partner
Serving at HOPA since? 1996 (counting days at the “old house”)

Where were you born? Honolulu, Hawaii.
Favorite shave ice? Kalespin since it’s made with my two most favorite vegetables packed with antioxidants!  Runner-ups would be lilikoi and coconut.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Kaneohe, then Kapolei.
What are you most proud of? My children Clint and Channie who are happy, healthy, confident, & humble young adults, managing to be who they are today after growing up in a single parent home.
What are your passions? Making heart-to-heart connections sharing Pure Aloha with every single soul that I have the opportunity to meet inside or outside of HOPA.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? A seagull so I could fly high and fly free enabling me to have a holistic and improved perspective of life and the world below.
If you could spend a year with anyone who would it be? Jesus, secondly the Dalai Lama.

Where were you born?
Honolulu, Hawaii. 
Favorite shave ice? A Hawaiian Superman made by a HOPAH!
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Any Pure Aloha-filled community in HI!
What are you most proud of? Living Pure Aloha one day at a time as best I can.
What are your passions? Our one world ‘ohana, social entrepreneurship, Hawaii, continual learning, itinerary-free travel, and meditation. 
If you could be any animal, what would you be? Something aquatic! Friends liken me to a honu because I tend to be peaceful and slow-moving.
If you could spend a year with anyone who would it be? The Buddha (post-Enlightenment).

MATT, House Manager

Where were you born?
Chula Vista, California.
Favorite shave ice? Green Tea & Kona Coffee, one scoop Tahitian Vanilla & one scoop chocolate coconut mac ice cream.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? North Shore.
What are you most proud of? This is an ever changing answer. I am proud of my past, present, and will be proud of my future. That should about cover it.
What are your passions in life? The constant improvement of life.  Mine and those around me.
If you could be any animal, what animal would you be? I would either be a Tiger. Or a human.
If you could spend a year with anyone who would it be? Bruce Lee, I would like to learn from his understanding of life physically, spiritually, and mentally.

Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Laie!
What are you most proud of? Opportunity to serve at HOPA, stereotype breaking, communicating in sign language, expressing what can’t be said, and being LDS (Mormon)!
What are your passions? HOPA, ASL, SMILING! Living life as God would want me to live! 
If you could be any animal, what would you be? Does Winnie the Pooh count? He is cute, cuddly, happy, and a WONDERFUL optimist. He helps people be happy and enjoys life completely!
If you could spend a year with anyone who would it be? Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. He is one of the GREATEST examples of living a life full of Aloha!

ARIN, HOPA Host

Where were you born?
Guatemala.
Favorite shave ice? Mango, Strawberry, Watermelon with Tahitian Vanilla ice cream & Dream Sauce.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Ala Moana or Waikiki.
What are you most proud of? My parents for sacrificing so much to bring me and my brother to the U.S. Thanks to them, I am in this country with better opportunities, and a chance to be anything I want to be. They have made me the person I am today.
What are your passions in life? Music & Christianity. My dream is to be a Christian Worship songwriter and to have a program to help at-risk adolescent teens.
If you could be any animal, what animal would you be? A parrot because I’d be able to speak back what people say in any language.  
If you could spend a year with anyone who would it be? Jesus. I would love to hear him speak his parables, words of wisdom, & his teachings of everlasting PURE love.

JOJO, HOPA Host

Where were you born?
Honolulu, Hawaii. 
Favorite shave ice? Green Tea and Milk Chocolate with Tahitian Vanilla ice cream in the middle and Li Hing Powder on the Chocolate side. 
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? On the UH Campus as a Food Truck! 
What are you most proud of? When I’m able to complete or do something that was really difficult for me to do. I like overcoming challenges.
What are your passions? The arts. I love being creative, whether it’s through music, theatre, film or literature. It’s a great way to express yourself and to relate to others.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? Shiba Inu! They’re awesome dogs, very independent and sometimes quirky. They’re small but with big personalities and I like to think I’m the same.
If you could spend a year with anyone who would it be? Konstantin Stanislavski. In my opinion, he developed really interesting ways to approach acting. I would have loved to have studied under him to improve as an actor.

KIKO, HOPA Host

Where were you born?
Honolulu, Hawaii.
Favorite shave ice? LARGE Li Hing, Milk Chocolate, & Green Tea. Tahitian Vanilla ice cream, Li Hing powder, Uncle Clay’s dream sauce, and Auntie Syl’s heart-shaped mochi!
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? West of town.
What are you most proud of? I am proud when I can take the weight off someone’s shoulders. Whether it’s through a good laugh or some relaxing chatter, enjoying the lighter side of life with someone can help to ease an otherwise stressed mindset. 
What are your passions? One thing the world needs above all is Pure Aloha – open hearts and open minds, woven together with a sense of community. Doing what I can to realize that dream is my passion.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? A mimic octopus. They’re insane!
If you could spend a year with anyone, who would it be? Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. I’d love to absorb his knowledge thus far about the cosmos, particle theories, and just cool science stuff.

Favorite shave ice? Green Tea, Milk Chocolate, and Coffee Chocolate Coco Mac ice cream, mochi, dream sauce, and azuki beans.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Lanikai.
What are you most proud of? Times when I do something completely on my own and by my own will power and creative thought and then I get the credit that I deserve. To even be known and admired for something that I have done makes me really happy.
What are your passions? Connecting with others. Whether it be through music, art, or conversations, it fills me with an idea that everyone isn’t so different after all.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? A cat. Why? Because cats are cool.
If you could spend a year with anyone, who would it be? My 3rd grade teacher who passed away when I entered 7th grade. Everything that she every taught me never really made sense until I started growing up and realizing that she was one of the greatest people who taught me. When she was my teacher, she was a very wise woman and she always encouraged me to do whatever my heart wanted. If I could spend a year with her, I am sure that she could teach me so much more.

Favorite shave ice? Mango and chocolate or li hing with vanillia ice cream, mochi, and li hing powder.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Ala Moana or Ward.
What are you most proud of? I still have a lot of time to become proud of something. If I absolutely had to pick something though, I think the fact that I graduated from Kalani, is as much as a surprise as something to be proud of.
What are your passions? Life itself is a passion to me, but anything related to any art form is my passion.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? Oh. My. Gosh. ALL OF THEM, except bugs. Probably a cat because everybody wants to be a cat.
If you could spend a year with anyone, who would it be? This is nearly as challenging to answer as the shave ice question. I would spend another year learning from my music teacher Mr. Daniel Akemoto, because not only does learning about music and singing make my days better, but he has also taught me a lot about the smaller, more precious things in life.
KEILANI, HOPA Host

Favorite shave ice? Mango and Strawberry with Ice Cream.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Near the university area by because it is close to my house and I could go there a lot.
What are you most proud of? Shooting 3-pointer shots in basketball.
What are your passions? I like to dance and listen to music on my iPod.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? A monkey because I was born on the year of the monkey and I like to eat bananas.
If you could spend a year with anyone, who would it be? Taylor Swift, my favorite singer!
ZOIE, HOPA Host

Where were you born?
Honolulu, Hawaii.
Favorite shave ice? Green Tea with Azuki Beans.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Near Ala Moana or Ward.
What are you most proud of? Being able to help others accomplish tasks that are easier when done together. I’m most proud when I’m helping to ease a load off of someone else’s shoulders.
What are your passions? Creating relationships with everyone, even the hardest of people. I want to be able to relate to everybody on some type of level. By challenging myself, I grow more as a person and can help someone else grow also.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? I would be a dolphin. They’re fun-loving animals, and are instinctive in helping others. Plus, they get to live in the water.
If you could spend a year with anyone, who would it be? My Baba, she passed away a few years ago, but before that, she tried teaching me different things that I never thought I would be interested in or need, now I can see she had a lot of wisdom in her. I’d love to have a year with her to just spend time with her and learn as much as I can from her.
TASHA, HOPA Host

Where were you born?
Beverley Hills, CA.
Favorite shave ice? Coconut, Strawberry, with Chocolate drizzle, Ice Cream, and Mochi.
Where would you like to see the next HOPA? Mainland – to share shave ice with people who might have had it before.
What are you most proud of? Times that I’ve worked hard for the things that I want and/or need. It makes reaching goals that much more satisfying when I know I’ve achieved them by my own willpower and determination. 
What are your passions? Visiting new places, trying new things, and meeting new people. I love having conversations especially with people who are visiting the islands because I find it interesting, hearing about where they come from. I think it’s cool to have friends all around the world so that one day I can visit them!
If you could be any animal, what would you be? An Arctic Tern (seabird) because in its lifetime it flys nearly three times the distance from the Earth to the moon.  Airplanes flights are expensive.
If you could spend a year with anyone, who would it be? My grandma on my dad’s side. She passed away before I ever got a chance to meet her, and from my dad’s stories she seemed to be an interesting and fun person.
